Dr Michael Coupe

Consultant Anaesthetist

Dr Coupe is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Sulis Hospital, with advanced training in pain management and intensive care medicine.

He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and a Fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. Since 2004 he has held a consultant post in anaesthesia, pain medicine and intensive care medicine at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, where he is also a hospital governor. Dr Coupe has written extensively on the use of opioids in chronic non-cancer pain and holds the post of honorary clinical lecturer at the University of Bristol.

Qualifying in medicine in 1995, he undertook specialist anaesthetic and pain training in London and Bristol. In addition to expertise in the medication management of persistent pain and the psychological impact of chronic pain, he is highly skilled in interventional pain medicine and regional anaesthesia. He is frequently called on to provide pain interventions for elite athletes.

As a member of Bath Pain Management, Dr Coupe provides a comprehensive range of interventional and non-interventional pain services at Sulis Hospital. The driving motivation of his work is to improve the quality of life of his patients who are experiencing persistent pain, through interventional and non-interventional treatments as appropriate.

Some long-term pain conditions are relatively straightforward to manage and can be quickly and effectively treated with safe, well-evidenced interventions such as spinal injections. However, some conditions require a more complex, holistic management plan. This plan may include injection treatments, a tailored medication plan, exercise and physiotherapy and help reducing the psychological aspects of chronic pain. These different facets come together to achieve the aim of reducing the impact of persistent pain on quality of life.

Dr Coupe has many years of experience working both in the NHS and the private sector treating and providing management plans for patients with persistent pain and if appropriate will work to create a holistic pain management plan to complement any interventional treatments.
