Mr Mike Williamson
Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon
MD FRCS(Eng) FRCS(Gen)
Mike graduated from Cardiff Medical School in 1987 and remained in South Wales for the early years of his surgical training before moving to The General Infirmary at Leeds to undertake research for an MD thesis. He then joined the West Yorkshire Specialist Registrar Scheme to complete his surgical training, including a specialist colorectal fellowship year in Concord Hospital, Sydney.
In August 1999, he was appointed as Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon to the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and only recently retired from that post after more than 25 years of treating colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other colorectal conditions as well as taking part in the general surgical on-call rota. Mike has maintained a specialist interest in groin and abdominal wall hernia surgery throughout his career.
When meeting you in his clinic, Mike’s overall aim is to explain your specific medical condition, its investigation, and treatment in a clear and accessible way. Relying on significant experience, he believes in empowering patients to make informed decisions about whether surgery is appropriate, especially when a more conservative approach may be suitable, and focuses on helping patients understand the risks of surgical treatment in comparison to the benefits.
Many patients have specifically mentioned that they leave consultations with a better understanding of their condition and its management options, even after having previously discussed their case with other healthcare professionals.
