Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a well-established dermatological treatment that has been used for over a century. Since the 1940s, it has involved the use of liquid nitrogen, which is stored at extremely low temperatures and applied directly to the skin. This produces a carefully controlled cold burn that destroys targeted surface skin cells.
The treated area begins to thaw within one to two minutes. Following treatment, the skin may become red, swollen or blistered, but this usually settles within a few days, longer if a larger area is treated.
One of the key benefits of cryotherapy is that it often removes the need for surgical intervention. It is delivered during an outpatient appointment in the clinic.
What Conditions Can Cryotherapy Treat?
Cryotherapy is highly effective in treating a range of benign and sun-related skin conditions, including:
• Actinic keratoses (sun-damaged precancerous lesions)
• Seborrhoeic keratoses
• Solar lentigo (sun spots)
• Viral warts
• Genital warts (condyloma acuminatum)
• Molluscum contagiosum
• Dermatofibromas
• Bowen’s disease
• Other benign skin lesions suitable for cold therapy
• Some small basal cell carcinomas
What Are the Benefits of Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy offers several advantages:
• Quick and simple procedure
• Minimal preparation time
• No need for local anaesthetic or stitches
• Low risk of infection
• Minimal wound care required
• Can be used on a wide range of skin lesions
Is Cryotherapy Suitable for Everyone?
Cryotherapy uses extreme cold and may not be suitable for every patient. Your consultant dermatologist at Sulis Hospital will assess your condition to ensure that cryotherapy is the right treatment for you.
Some mild side effects are expected, including:
• Swelling
• Blistering
• Temporary changes in skin colour (lightening or darkening)
• Mild discomfort or headache (in some cases)
Scarring is rare. It is important not to pick at any scabs or blisters. Keep the treated area clean and dry. Any blistering will typically crust over and heal on its own. Applying Vaseline may help soothe the area and prevent dryness.
Although infections are uncommon, if you experience increased pain, redness, or swelling a few days after treatment, contact your GP. You may require a short course of antibiotic cream or tablets.
In many cases, one treatment session is sufficient, but this depends on the size, type, and number of lesions. Your dermatologist will advise you on what to expect.
