Split earlobe repair

What Are Split Earlobes?

Split earlobes are a common concern, especially since the ears are always visible. The condition may involve a complete split in the earlobe or an elongated piercing hole that has stretched over time. This can occur for several reasons:

•    Trauma (e.g., earrings being accidentally pulled)
•    Long-term use of heavy earrings
•    Wearing disc-style earrings
•    Naturally weaker earlobe tissue due to genetics

People with naturally delicate earlobes may be more prone to splitting, especially if they wear heavy earrings regularly. Injuries can also occur during activities like contact sports (e.g., rugby or martial arts) or when earrings become caught on clothing.

What Is Split Earlobe Repair Surgery?

Split earlobe repair is a minor surgical procedure available at Sulis Hospital. It is performed as a day case and aims to restore the earlobe’s appearance and strength.

While most patients seek treatment for cosmetic reasons, the surgery can also help prevent further issues, such as repeated tearing or discomfort caused by stretched holes.

The procedure is carried out by a skilled ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) or plastic surgeon.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Once the area is numbed, the surgeon removes any scar tissue and carefully stitches the earlobe back together using dissolvable stitches.

The operation typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, and patients can return home the same day.

After the anaesthetic wears off, you may experience mild discomfort for a few days, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol.

You’ll be seen for a follow-up about a week after the procedure, at which point your dressings will be removed.

A small scar will remain but will fade and improve over time.

Your specialist will likely recommend waiting at least six months before re-piercing your earlobe. If you do choose to re-pierce, it’s best to avoid the scar area, as the tissue there is weaker and more prone to re-tearing or elongation.
