Mr James Hewes
Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon
Mr Hewes has had a broad Surgical training. He was brought up in Oxfordshire before qualifying from Sheffield University Medical School in 1995. He spent the early years of his training in Australia and London. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2006 investigating liver cancer. His specialist training was concentrated in the South East and he undertook a specialist Bariatric fellowship at UCLH. He moved to Bristol and took up his substantive consultant position in 2012.
Mr Hewes expertise includes weight loss (bariatric) surgery, gallstone disease and hernia repair.

Mr Hewes is an experienced surgeon offering all aspects of weight loss surgery including laparoscopic (keyhole) Gastric Band, Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Balloons including the Elipse System. He also regularly performs complex revisional (redo) Bariatric Surgery
Mr Hewes regularly supervises other surgeons and runs training courses for Bariatric Surgeons from other hospitals.
He is committed to achieve the best and safest outcomes for our patients, and consider it a privilege to work in this exciting area of surgery. He is dedicated to debunk many of the myths and stigmas around obesity and spends much of his time in education of the public and health professionals in order to improve understanding of this disease and the transformative effects of surgery.
Together the team have been involved in over 6000 operations in more than a 20 year period.
